AbstractThe history of the Rocky Mountain Region is sketched from the time of the Spanish conquistadores in the sixteenth century through the nineteenth century to define how psychology has been affected by its geographical, cultural, and historical context. Early inhabitants–Indians, the Spanish, and later the trappers, traders, Mormons, mineral prospectors, and ranchers from the East–are described as is the terrain and hazardous life in the area. AbstractThe West has been a metaphor for American nationalism, and in its folklore Americans have come to see themselves in a light that is as appealing today as it was during the frontier stage of American development. Frederick Jackson Turner's famous frontier.thesis is reinterpreted, suggesting that Turner became the country's most famous historian because of his emphasis on affirming American nationalism and not because of his accuracy in recording the frontier process.

AbstractSunshine, mild dry climate, clean air, blue skies, and unexcelled natural scenic beauty have long been associated with the Rocky Mountain region. This image was fostered by early visitors' journals and by outstanding landscape paintings and photography. AbstractThere was a strong interest in psychology at Brigham Young University at the turn of the century; the third president was a psychologist and a number of distinguished psychologists regularly visited the campus. An outstanding young scholar who was destined to become the only Mormon president of the American Psychological Association started a vigorous academic psychology program in those early years, but he left the university because of a controversy over his teachings. Psychology at Brigham Young University developed little from that time until the 1940s. The 1950s were a time of rapid growth and development, expansion of the faculty, and the establishment of doctoral programs.

AbstractThe University of Deseret (now the University of Utah) was organized in 1850. Mental philosophy appeared in the curriculum in 1868, and psychology, by that title, in 1893; but the designation of a department and the hiring of a faculty trained specifically in psychology did not occur until 1911 with the arrival of Joseph Peterson. AbstractIn its beginning in 1874 Colorado College set itself against its region. An early president saw conscienceless citizens on the one hand and papists or Mormons on the other. The college, with its Congregational principles and the liberal arts tradition of the New England colleges, was established to provide Christian leadership for these unfortunates. Psychology, as it emerged in the 1880s, reflected the same influences as did the college as a whole. Theologian presidents first taught it as a sideline and, when psychologists came in the 1890s, they were trained in the New England tradition of the early presidents, though the religious pretensions quickly disappeared. They set the discipline at Colorado College on the path that it follows today: commitment to the liberal arts and sciences.
