摘要:
AbstractThe meaning of “phi” in Max Wertheimer's 1912 article on seen movement (the publication of which marks the beginning of Gestalt psychology) and the import of the article itself were topics of a report in thisJournal. The claims made in that report are questioned here, and a different interpretation of phi and the original article is offer

摘要:
AbstractRobert Morris Ogden of Cornell University played a major role in introducing Gestalt psychology to the United States. He gave Kurt Koffka his first opportunity to publish an introduction to Gestalt psychology in an American journal, translated Koffka's first book into English, and brought Koffka, Wolfgang Köhler, and Kurt Lewin to Cornell as visiting professors. The relation of E. B. Titchener to Gestalt psychology and Gestalt psychologists is also discussed

摘要:
AbstractThe previous literature concerning the origin of the termsocial sciencehas traced the earliest usage of the English phrase to J. S. Mill in 1829 and of the Frenchscience socialeto Charles Fourier in 1808. A prior, albeit vague, employment of the term is found in a 1785 letter by John Adams. In addition, an unambiguous usage ofsocial sciencehas been discovered in the 1825Articles of Agreementof the London Cooperative Society. The labelsocial scientistappears as early as 1875.

摘要:
AbstractThe heavily publicized and controversial general information questionnaire developed by Thomas A. Edison in 1921 has remained a neglected topic in the history of the mental test. Widely known throughout much of the nation, the Edison questionnaire influenced the popular recognition achieved by the mental test. At the same time, it contributed to a loss in the mental test's scientific credibility by (1) encouraging the development of a question‐and‐answer craze that became associated with the mental test; (2) stimulating the use of poorly constructed tests employed by businesses; and (3) associating the mental test with Edison's outrageous claim that college graduates were “amazingly igno

摘要:
AbstractConsiderable differences exist in theories and methods in contemporary empathy research in psychology. An analysis is made of the ideas of early theorists in an attempt to identify the roots of these differences. Aesthetic philosopher‐psychologists such as Theodor Lipps are compared to sociologists such as G. H. Mead, social psychologists, including Leonard Cottrell and Gordon Allport, the developmentalist Jean Piaget, and therapists such as Sigmund Freud and Carl Rogers. This analysis documents the bases for empathy being viewed as projection, identification, emotional contagion, or role taking. It also suggests that current researchers should plan studies that tap more of the total psychological empathic experienc

摘要:
AbstractThe Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology had some surprising beginnings, several important events having taken place north of the Mason‐Dixon line. An attempt is made here, through a series of reminiscences, to recapture the flavor of the organization when it had progressed to its midcareer period in the 1930s and 1940
