As the role of nurse practitioner develops, research is needed to determine the influence of the structure of the delivery setting on performance in the role. Up to this time most research has dealt with what effect the nurse practitioner has on the structure. Structural variables as well as possible research topics are discussed.

The purpose of these articles on problem-oriented peer review is to offer the nurse practitioner a tool by which the patient's primary care can be evaluated within the time limits of active practice. Part One will describe the audit system and its application to the practice of the primary nurse in the hospital or inpatient setting. Part Two will describe the application of the problem-oriented peer review to the practice of the primary nurse who functions outside of the in-patient setting. Most systems for change have human and structural barriers; some solutions to these barriers will be illustrated.
