摘要:
Health screening of children has been defined as a primary component of the role of the nurse practitioner.3The concept of screening has evolved during the past ten years with the primary focus being on identification of disease or potentially physically handicapping conditions. The nurse practitioner, with her commitment to the total child, feels the need to screen not only the physical aspect of the child's health, but the psychosocial and environmental aspects as well. Therefore, nursing must develop its own philosophy of screening which deals with the total child and his environment. This approach must look at what is most effective and feasible in the environment in which the nurse practitioner works. In order for the nurse to effectively screen, several questions must be considered. What is screening? Why screen? Who should be screened and for what? How to select among available screening tools? What do you do with the information obtained from the screening process? This article addresses itself to these questions.

摘要:
Alcoholism has reached epidemic proportions in our society with an estimated ten million persons currently suffering from this problem. The malignant effects of alcoholism are felt not only by the victim, but by close family members as well. In some way, fifty million American lives are being influenced by alcoholism. Every nurse practitioner can expect to have frequent contact with persons who are directly or indirectly affected by alcoholism. It is imperative that the nurse practitioner develop a thorough understanding of the dynamics of alcoholism in a family in order to accurately assess and intervene in the complex problems experienced by families with alcoholism.
