A helium activated firing device was used to propel viscoelastic fluid slugs (350 cc) to Mach I velocities. Aerodynamic forces disrupt the slug which eventually transforms into a cloud of droplets that fall on the ground below. Various concentrations and types of polymethyl methacrylate (PMM A) in diethylmalonate (DEM) were disseminated. The resultant average drop size for each trial was measured and shown to significantly increase with the addition of polymer. A correlation between average drop size and fluid viscosity was not observed. Both a relative relaxation time deduced from a simple die swell experiment and the first normal stress differenceN1correlated dissemination trials conducted at ambient temperatures. However, only the relative relaxation time correlation was consistent with breakup trials using heated fluids. Use ofN1, for predicting particle size from dissemination tests employing heated viscoelastic fluids can produce considerable error.

This is an experimental study on the drag reduction phenomenon in a gas-particle suspension two-phase flow system. The purpose of the research was to examine the effect of static charges carried by the conveyed particles on the drag reduction characteristics of a flowing suspension in horizontal and vertical tubes. A specifically designed experimental loop was used to perform simultaneous pressure drop and particle charge measurements. The charge on the particles flowing in the system was artificially increased using high voltage rod-in-cylinder Corona chargers mounted in the closed loop. The particle charge was measured in a Farraday cage sampling device and the effective current generated by particle impact on a specially designed spherical nickel probe mounted in the two-phase flow was also recorded.

A spinning disc atomizer has been used to characterize the mist flammability of Jet A and diesel fuels that contain high molecular weight polymers. The critical disc velocity required to produce significant flame propagation was shown to depend on polymer concentration, molecular weight, solvent viscosity, and polymer degradation.

Liquid velocity profiles in a bubble column were measured with the aid of a hot-film anemometer. Two different types of profiles were detected that were characterized by the formation of a boundary layer at the column wall. Under slow flow conditions, the boundary layer is large and controls the liquid velocity profile, but in turbulent flow the boundary layer is very small and has no significant effect on the velocity profile. Microscopic and macroscopic balances were used to predict both the liquid velocity profile and the average liquid velocity.

One of the basic parts of the sugar production technology is crystallization. The value characterizing this process, i.e. the crystallization rate is a complex function of a variety of factors. The principal ones are: supersaturation. mixing, temperature, viscosity, crystal content in the massecuite, and in technical sugar solutions the effect of non-sugars has to be added. An important role is played by the geometrical layout of the laboratory equipment or industrial apparatus.

Power for agitation has been measured under aerated and unaerated conditions in a 0.29 m vessel of Rushton dimensions at specific powers up to 18 W/kg. The fluids studied were water. Newtonian solutions up to 19 m Pas and non-Newtonian shear thinning fluids some of which also exhibited a yield stress and some of which were viscoelastic. For the unaerated case, the power number-Reynolds number plot is in good agreement with the literature. For the aerated case, the result can conveniently be divided into three Reynolds number regions. AtRe> ∼900, the data obtained for the solutions is not markedly different to that for water except that a higher impeller speed is required to achieve complete gas dispersion. For ∼ 10 <Re< ∼900. the power drawn is independent of gassing rate and greater levels of elasticity and the presence of a yield stress leads to the lowest power numbers. ForRe< ∼10, the gassed and ungassed power numbers are equal.

Studies related to delineating the influence of thermal-buoyancy forces on the thermal-hydraulics of Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor piping systems and heat exchangers under low-flow thermal transient conditions have generated unique information which will aid design of these components. Various buoyancy force induced phenomena such as thermal stratification, flow recirculation, stagnation, and channeling are described and the importance to component performance are discussed.

The effect of the addition of the salt sodium chloride on the liquid-liquid equilibrium data of the ternary system isopropyl ether-acetic acid-water has been experimentally investigated at 30°C. Both the solubility (bimodal) curve and the tie-line have been determined for three salt concentrations. The addition of sodium chloride salt enhances the distribution of acetic acid in ether layer. The tie-line data have been correlated by Othmer and Tobias and Hand plots. The ternary solubility and tie-line data at 30°C for this system in the absence of salt have also been experimentally obtained in this work.
