Prolonged resuscitation in adults produces a recognizable pattern of myocardial injury characterized by contraction bank necrosis, focal hemorrhage, and coagulation necrosis. To role out the possibility of these changes being due to ischemia and underlying coronary artery disease, autopsies of 26 children admitted to Stanford from 1981 to1983 were reviewed. SEventeen had attempted resuscitation with catecholamines and defibrillation; the remainder did not. Sections of myocardium were graded by two observers. For controls, brain-dead heart donors otherwise disease-free and essentially untreated with either defibrillation or beta-active catechol amines were used. Defibrillation alone and catecholamines alone each produced equal amounts of destruction, but using these together resulted in a statistically significant increase in tissue destruction. This suggests that the damaging effects of these agents are synergistic, not additive.

In several clinical studies, the diagonal earlobe crease has been statistically related to the presence of ischemic heart diseas. Only one study of a relatively small number of hospitalized patients attempts to relate the earlobe crease with amount of stenotic coronary atherosclerosis demonstrated at necropsy. We examined the relationship between the degree of coronary atherosclerosis and the presence of a diagonal earlobe crease in 800 consecutive autopsies performed for medicolegal reasons and thus including a wide spectrum of subjects.Statistical analysis by the ξ2test demonstrated a positive correlation (p<0.01) between the presence of the diagonal earlobe crease and obstructive coronary artery greater than 75%. We conclude that the autopsy findings support the clinical observations that the diagonal earlobe crease is a cutaneous sign of obstructive ceronary atherosclerosis and narrowing on at least one major coronary artery greater than 75%. Suicide among adolescents is reported to be on the increase recently, and much attention from the news media to medical circles has been focused on this problem.This paper presents a comprehensive study of 87 completed adolescent suicides occurring between Junuary 1, 1970 and January 31, 1985, in Shelby Country, Tennessee. Factors including age sex, race, and manner of death are examined as well as psychological, sociological, familial.and other environmental influences related to the deaths. In our series, the older white made adolescent dominated the statistics by far, and the most frequent mode of death was by fiream injury to the head.A brief discussion of studies related to suicide in general, and especially to adolescent suicide, in included.

A study of suicidal drownings was performed by using the case files of the Office of the Medical Examiner of Metropolitan DAde Country in Miami, Florida, U.S.A., during 1980–1984.A total of 70 cases were collected and analyzed as to the age, race, sex, and cause of death of the victim, along with blood alcohol content, the drugs detected at postmortem examination, the geographic location of the terminal incident, the scene circumstances, the presence or absence of a suicide note, and the reason for the suicide. Essentially, one deals with an older white male population, although all age groups can be affected. Members of the population studied frequently died from drowning alone, rather than from additional contributory causes.Most were sober and frequently without drugs detected. Most incidents occurred at home or in a canal, with the victim just “found floating.” A note was absent approximately half the time.The reason for the act was depression concerning poor health, death of a loved one, financial problems, chronic pain, or being“ tired of life.” A discussion ensues about the approach a forensic scientist should have concerning such cases.

Fifty-six consecutive cases of suicide by hanging are reviewed. The data provide some evidence for associations between sucide by hanging and youth, incarceration, black males, and clustering. Evidence was noted of low incidence in females, rarity of white female hangings at home, a preference to hang oneself away from home if there have been previous suicide attempts, and possible seasonal trends which may differ from suicide overall. Thus, aside from the method chosen, hanging victims as a group displayed some differences from suicides in general.

The aim of the present scanning electron microscopy study was to document the nature of morphologic changes occurring in human enamel and dentin subjectedin vitroto temperatures in the range of 200–1,000 °C for variable times. The results of the investigation confirm that human enamel and dentin remain microscopically identifiable after incineration at 1000 °C.Furthermore, these tissues ramain identifiable afterincineration at 1,000 °C for periods greater than 3h.No consistent or reliable differences in morphology could be detected in enamel or mineralized dentin incinerated in the temperature range 200–600 °C. Temperature-dependent changes involving the predentin zone were observed. Folloing incineration at 800 °C for over 3 h and at 1,000°C for 3 form was observed.

Three fatal cases of death following sternal bone marrow needle biopsy have come to the authors' attention in the past 10 years. The hazards of the technique may be related to the incongrous stylet guard-adjustment for the thickness and hardness of the sternal wall. All three cases in volved suits for professional malpractice. Controversial aspects of these cases involving physician liability are discussed.
