Four nasopharyngeal carcinomas (NPC) with positive Epstein-Barr virus serology were successfully grafted into athymic mice. Tumor growth could be maintained up to the 22nd passage. Strong similarity between original NPC biopsies and xenografts is demonstrated in terms of light microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Growth kinetics show an increase of tumor volume doubling time and a decrease of the labeling index after several passages. Xenografting of NPC into nude mice is evaluated as a useful in vivo tumor model for experimental NPC investigation.

The freeze fracture technique was used to study intercellular junctions of inner ear anlages developed in vitro. The 16th gestational day inner ear from the CBA/CBA mouse was cultured for 5 days whereafter the specimens were analyzed. Inner ears developed in vivo were used as controls. A considerable variation in the maturation of the tight junctional complexes occurred in both the vestibular and cochlear parts of the labyrinth. The sequential maturation of tight junctions and gap junctions showed the same structural features in the in vivo and the in vitro developed innear ears, although it seemed that the in vivo developed inner ears showed a slightly more overall mature morphology of tight junctions.

Auditory nerve action potential (AP), cochlear microphonics (CM) and summating potential (SP) were recorded from 6 patients with low-tone hearing loss without vertigo. All these cases showed high AP and –SP amplitude and satisfactory CM response. These findings resembled the electrocochleographic findings of type 1 which is an early stage of Ménière’s disease. Hearing returned to normal range in half of the cases but remained hardly changed in the other half. The difference between these two groups could not be clarified electrocochleographically. 40-Hz responses were evaluated for objective threshold estimation and frequency specificity at 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000 Hz and compared to normal middle-latency response (MLR) recordings. Disturbing influences were examined. Stimulus-intensity-dependent amplitude characteristics were investigated. 30 adults with normal hearing and 45 with sensorineural hearing loss were included. On the whole, 40-Hz responses gave better threshold estimation than MLR as compared with pure-tone audiograms. In about 80%, deviation was less than 10 dB. For both the 40-Hz method and the MLR, myogenic potentials and changes in the level of vigilance are disturbing influences which cause amplitude variations. Amplitude-intensity functions can be described and their possible contribution to an objective identification of recruitment was examined. Additionally, an improvement of threshold estimation was achieved by narrow-band filtering of the response curve around 40 Hz.

The suppressive effect of flunarizine on tinnitus was assessed in a double-blind trial in 50 patients with tinnitus due to various causes. The duration of the study was 6 weeks. Serum levels of the drug were determined. The patient’s subjective assessment of the effect was taken as criterion for the evaluation; objective tests were found to be unsuitable for this purpose. Ten of the patients suffered from dizziness as a secondary complaint. For the group as a whole, there was no difference between flunarizine and the placebo with respect to the effect on tinnitus, but in the 10 patients with dizziness as well there was a significant difference in favor of the drug. The vestibulospinal level of vestibular function is commonly neglected in the evaluation of dizzy patients. Posturography provides a measuring technique for this function (static balance), and thus becomes a counterpart of electronystagmography, and proves to be an indispensable complement in the evaluation of a number of cases. It enables one to make a better assessment of the patient’s condition and to obtain decisive indications for his treatment. During pregnancy aggravation of nasal allergic symptoms is occasionally observed in subjects with nasal allergy. To evaluate the effect of female hormones on the muscarinic receptor and the α1-adrenergic receptor of the nasal mucosa, receptor binding assay was performed using the nasal mucosa of pregnant guinea pigs and of male guinea pigs; the latter were treated either with estrogen or with progesterone. Pregnancy induced a significant decrease of the density of the α1-adrenergic receptor of the nasal mucosa (p < 0.05). Estrogen induced a significant increase of the density of the muscarinic receptor (p < 0.05), while progesterone induced a significant decrease of the density of the α1-adrenergic receptor of the nasal mucosa of guinea pigs. When similar changes of the receptor can be induced by female hormons in the nasal mucosa of the human subjects, this may facilitate secondary development of hyperreactive nasal symptoms in subjects who have been sensitized before without apparent nasal sympto

We describe a patient with a polyethylene tube to the middle ear who developed severe deafness and vertigo after treatment with ear drops where neomycin B was considered to be the most likely offending agent. High concentration of this antibiotic in the ear drops and access of the solution to the round window membrane in the absence of inflammatory edema and secretion may have been significant factors contributing to this serious side effect. Less ototoxic preparations should be used in patients with perforated tympanic membranes or grommets.
