Post-intubation stenosis in children is often not amenable to surgical treatment; nor can it easily improve by endoscopic insertion of endoprostheses, as in some adult cases. Endoscopic cryosurgery appeared to provide a new means for such cases. Experimental studies have shown that cryo-necrosis of cartilage does not necessarily interfere with the growth of the laryngo-tracheal cartilaginous structures, and new formation of cartilage prevents the loss of mechanical stability. Preliminary clinical results are reported on patients who did not seem suited for any other therapeutic procedure and were successfully treated by means of endoscopic cryo-surgery.

Medial radical neck dissection with primary closure of pharyngostoma and covering of skin defect has been used for treatment of recurrent laryngeal or hypopharyngeal cancer in 13 patients in the ENT department Zurich. The main advantage of the described technique is a primary wound healing and a short hospitalization. Plastic reconstruction of the cervical esophagus is possible in patients without relapse for one year and good general health condition.

Gout in the temporomandibular joint is rare, but very painful. However, it is readily diagnosed by blood uric acid determination, and is easy to treat. Consequently, when arthritic changes occur in the temporomandibular joint the possibility of this disease should be taken into consideration. A case with diagnostic difficulties is reported.

Benign and malignant osteopetrosis is reviewed with special reference to deafness and facial palsy. When nystagmography became available, a changing pattern of the slow component of nystagmus was recognized. It was observed that the speed of the eye motion may be slower or faster while the slow component is executed. Individual variations exist but there is a changing pattern during the sequence of evoked nystagmus. Measuring the velocity of the slow phase by degree/sec at culmination of the caloric nystagmus became available as a useful parameter of nystagmus intensity. Later, it was proven that in every individual the velocity of the slow phase is proportional to the magnitude of end-organ stimulation. Furthermore, eye speed increases linearly with increased strength of the stimulation. The reliability, therefore, is obvious and the eye speed measurement of the evoked vestibular nystagmus has gained widespread popularity. However, there are numerous problems, shortcomings and pitfalls in measurement of the slow phase speed. The difficulties are enumerated and discussed briefly.

The amplitude of the slow component is one of the important parameters of vestibular nystagmus. In the present paper an attempt is made to examine the diagnostic significance of this parameter with respect to spontaneous, provoked and experimentally induced nystagmus. Particular interest is taken in the influence of unspecific and specific factors upon nystagmus amplitude such as optic fixation, alertness, habituation, compensation phenomena, peripheral and central vestibular lesions. Based upon statistical evaluation of the results of nystagmographic investigations, carried out in normal individuals as well as in patients suffering from a vestibular disorder, a further attempt is made to establish more reliable facts indicating the presence of a pathologic modification of nystagmus amplitude.
