The histological and biochemical (amylase, protein) consequences of occlusion by prolamine of the parotid duct were studied in 5 rabbits. Histological examination 2 weeks after occlusion revealed an atrophy of glandular parenchyma consistent with a very strong decrease of exportable glandular protein (especially amylase). At the same time marked sialadenitis-like changes could be noted. Prior to a possible use of occlusion by prolamine of the parotid duct in human patients, long-term studies in animals are therefore indicated.

Correlations among different equilibrium function tests were investigated in 130 patients with Ménière’s disease. The tests consisted of 22 different items, and the possible results could be put into a total of 49 categories. Using a factor analytic method, results falling in the positive area of the 1st axis indicate normality of the vestibular system, and results in the negative area, indicate an abnormality of the vestibular system. On the 2nd axis, the negative direction indicates an abnormality of the vestibulo-spinal system, and the positive direction an abnormality of the vestibulo-ocular system. A subject presenting a rare association of left labyrinthine and left hemispheric cerebellar lesion was examined, with recording and analysis of eye movements at different intervals. A complete compensation of the vestibular deficit and recovery of cerebellar postural ataxia, with persistence of limb incoordination and oculomotor abnormalities, were observed. The saccadic, smooth pursuit and optokinetic nystagmus systems were impaired. Ocular signs, in combination, may suggest a cerebellar dysfunction but they do not supply sufficient diagnostic criteria for localizing the cerebellar damage. Only the direction-specific impairment of smooth pursuit and optokinetic nystagmus is indicative of the side of the lesion.

The nature of the auditory brainstem potentials is studied, referring to the theory of the on-effect. The following stimuli are used: a click, a tone-burst of 3 kHz with a rise-decay time of 2 ms and a plateau of 1 ms, and finally different initial parts of the former tone-burst (the first 8, 4, 2, 1 cycles). Together with the electrical waveforms, the acoustic forms of the stimuli are described and the frequency spectra are measured. The auditory brainstem potential appears to be a pure onset response with a very short integration time. Only the initial part of the tone-burst (mainly the first oscillation) is responsible for eliciting the response. The consequences for the audiometric use of short tonal stimuli are discussed. Measurements of intensities or frequency spectra, technically or subjectively, of the whole tone-burts are inappropriate, because the intensity and frequency content of the effective stimulus must be considered.The real frequency specificity then becomes much poorer and differs little from the click stimulation.

A case of haemangioma of the left maxillary sinus is reported. Epistaxis from the left nasal cavity was the only presenting symptom. The tumor was completely excised by left lateral rhinotomy. The pre-operative diagnostic procedures included plain views, conventional tomography, CT, RI scanning and selective carotid arteriography, which all contributed to a definite pre-operative diagnosis of the tumour.

Four human facial muscles, platysma, m. levator labii, zygomaticus major and orbicularis oris, obtained during head and neck surgery, revealed no qualitative differences from normal human limb muscles, but differences with regard to fiber type distribution and fiber size. Mean fiber diameters of each muscle studied were largely 50% of those encountered in normal human limb muscles. Histographic analysis revealed that type II fibers were more frequent than type I fibers but that type IIB fibers were extremely scarce in number. The myofiber diameter spectrum was also larger in facial than in limb muscles, as myofibers produced variability coefficients around 325. The frequent presence of intramuscular nerve twigs and motor endplates may provide the opportunity of studying pre and postsynaptic pathology in future studies of denervated facial muscles.
