Recent data on subglacial bedrock topography and ice thickness in Antarctica are summarized and mapped, reflecting some new patterns of bedrock morphology and ice‐thickness distribution. East Antarctica, which is distinguished by predominant uplifting of subglacial relief, also displays the greater ice thickness, partly because uplands along the coast interfere with outflow from the central part of the ice sheet. Three large areas have ice thicknesses of more than 3000 m. In West Antarctica, with predominant bedrock subsidence, the ice thickness almost nowhere exceeds 3000 m because the generally low subglacial relief allows ice to drain.

New area figures have been computed on the basis of available cartographic sources (up to 1971) for Antarctica as a whole, for its hypsometric levels at 500‐m contour intervals, and for various types of ice formations, including some major ice shelves, and outlet glaciers, and the length of the Antarctic shoreline. Russian place names were first given to Antarctic geographic features by the Bellingshausen‐Lazarev expedition of 1819–21. The naming of Antarctic places was resumed on an intensive basis by the Soviet Antarctic Expeditions starting in 1956. The types of Russian prerevolutionary and Soviet place names are categorized, and their generalized areas of distribution are delimited.

Soviet expeditions have delimited a new Antarctic marginal sea off Victoria Land on the basis of distinctive bottom relief and ice conditions. The new sea, situated between the D'Urville Sea on the west and the Ross Sea, is distinguished throughout the year by the accumulation of sea ice forming the so‐called Balleny ice field. The new sea has been named the Somov Sea, for the Soviet explorer M. M. Somov.

With no railways, and only a minimally developed highway network, water transport plays a major role in transport in the Soviet Northeast, comprising the Yakut ASSR and Magadan Oblast. Excluding ocean‐going transport, it is responsible for 40% of the freight traffic into the area, and for more than 70% of the freight traffic within the area. The article identifies the major organizations active in the area of the economy, with their relative shares in transport operations, and discusses such natural difficulties as the short ice‐free navigation season. Recent significant improvements in the composition of the river fleet and in dredging equipment are specified. The author then goes on to identify the major problems in water transport operations: slow cargo handling leadingtoexcessive waits by ships, and to significant underutilization of the fleet, and the shallow depths on many critical sections of rivers. Finally, after outlining the major aspects of the support services (navigation aids, dredging, etc.), the article concludes by treating in detail the peculiarities and problems of navigation on the major rivers of the Northeast: the Lena, Yana, Indigirka, Kolyma, Anabar, Olenek, and Anadyr’.
