The Energetic and Nutritional Contribution of Glucose and Glycine Taken up from Natural Sea Water by Adult Marine Mussels |

Abstract.The removal of glycine and glucose by freshly collected adultMytilus eduliswas determined using radiolabeled substances added to ambient concentrations of dissolved organic materials in freshly collected natural sea water. Uptake rates were calculated for substrate concentrations of 0.5 μM glycine and 1.0 μM glucose and were compared with the animals' energy and nitrogen demands as measured by oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rates. Respiration and ammonia excretion rates as well as cither glycine or glucose removal were all determined for the same animals. The mean respiration rate was 670μl O2g‐1h‐1, the mean ammonia excretion rate 1.95 μg‐at NH4‐g‐1h‐1. The calculated uptake rates were 0.48 μmol ‐g‐1‐h‐1for free amino acids and 0.44 μmol‐g‐1h‐1for free simple sugars. Such uptake rates could have contributed roughly 13% of the mussels' energy requirements or 10% of the mussels' nitrogen requirements assuming the following conditions: 0.5 μM concentration of free amino acids, 1.0μM concentration of simple sugars, uptake of total amino acids at a rate based on a weighted removal rate of glycine, alanine, serine, and glutamic acid, and uptake of simple sugars at a rate equal to that of glucose removal. Abstract.Driftwood, prop roots and other mangrove samples were collected from the intertidal regions of Brillant and Anse Boileau mangrove stands, in the Seychelles. This material was examined for the presence of higher marine fungi. Forty seven species of marine fungi were collected (37Ascomycotina, 1Basidiomycotina, 9 Deuteromycotina), withHalocypluna villosuthe most common fungus, whileAniptodera mungrovii, Antennospora quudricorruita, Halosarpheia marina, Ascomyccte sp. (4), andLulworthiu grandisporawere collected frequently. The mycota of the two mangrove stands arc compared. A list of fungi recorded from mangroves is compiled.

Abstract.Populations of the thalassinidean shrimpUpogebia pusillawere studied on tidal flats in the Northern Adriatic Sea. Biometric analysis showed a sexual dimorphism, especially in propodus size. Size frequency distributions revealed the presence of large animals during all seasons; recruitment by juveniles occurred in autumn. Moult intervals and moult increments were determined in the laboratory and used to generate growth curves which were compared with those calculated from size frequency distributions. The life span ofU, pusillais over 5 years. Ovigerous females occurred between March and September. Egg numbers were high in spring, lower in summer and increased with body size. The incubation time of embryos was 35 days; a female produces an estimated number of three egg batches during the breeding season. A total annual production of 994 kJ was estimated for a theoretical population of 100 animals; 13.5 % is spent for somatic growth, 31 % for egg production of females, and 55.2% is lost as exuviae. The population structures, growth and breeding patterns, as well as embryonic and larval development within theUpogebiidaeandCallianassidaeare discussed.

Abstract.In the water‐column of the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic Sea) flocculent, amorphous aggregates known as marine snow reach maximum density and dimensions up to 20cm in diameter during summer months. Sampling of these fragile macro‐aggregates was carried out by SCUBA‐divers.A large detrital component was found to be embedded in an organic matrix together with a large array of intact phytoplankton species. Heterotrophic bacterial density ranged from 2–65 × 108cells‐g‐1(marine snow dry wt) and is therefore of the same order of magnitude as in the surface layer of the sediments of the Gulf. In terms of biomass, bacteria reached only 30–95% of heterotrophic microflagellates.A mean abundance of marine snow of 5g (marine snow dry wt) m‐3was obtained for the water‐column above the pyenolinc. At this boundary layer, however, a mean abundance of about 10g (marine snow dry wt) m‐3led to the formation of a distinct, 10‐50cm thick layer.
