For definitive treatment of cholelithiasis, an effective procedure for detecting the presence of stones in the common duct is essential; operative cholangiography provides it. Its routine use in conjunction with cholecystectomy, which has been the policy at the authors' institution for two decades, can contribute significantly to reducing the morbidity associated with repeat operations on the biliary tract.
