The light flash, or scintillation, that occurs in a sensitive material when its electrons are excited by incoming radiation can be detected, multiplied, translated into electrical pulses, selected for energy values, and recorded—thereby providing an image of the distribution of radioactivity in the organ or tissue into which a tracer has been introduced. The techniques by which this goal is reached are detailed.
