Our ability to diagnose and treat the infertile male is advancing rapidly. Tests of sperm function, such as the sperm penetration assay (SPA) and the hemizona assay (HZA), provide qualitative and quantitative information regarding the fertilizing capacity of the sperm. Understanding these tests, as well as identifying factors that can adversely affect sperm function, are important in the thorough evaluation of the infertile male.
