It is argued that there is much, in the mechanics commonly taught at University, that serves no purpose whatsoever, either practical or intellectual, and that such parts could be thrown out without any real loss to anyone. The three branches into which mechanics might be divided, introductory, intermediate, and advanced, are each considered, as well as experimental work; and things that could be omitted, or places in which the treatment could be simplified, are pointed out.
