The essential elements of classical hypothesis testing—power, alpha, effect size, and sample size—are presented. The relationships between power and the other values and their relative importance are discussed, and an example formula for calculating minimum sample size is suggested. The authors propose that consideration and reporting of all these basic elements, particularly power, will enhance the interpretability of research reports inNURSING RESEARCH, regardless of the statistical test outcomes.
