When none of the obvious explanations account for the daily weight gain complained of by some middle-aged, often obese women, the clinician should entertain the diagnosis of cyclic edema. Recognition that the patient's problem is real, even if its origin is mysterious, is itself a positive step toward effective therapy. With various modalities, it is usually possible to help a substantial majority of these patients.
