&NA;Family caregivers begin to experience a variety of losses when a loved one develops Alzheimer's disease. Specific losses and accompanying grief must be understood by helping professionals in order to help families cope with this chronic disease. This article explains specific processes of anticipatory grief and mourning that family caregivers must complete in order to accommodate loss in a healthy way. The role of professionals in facilitating these processes is described.
