SummaryOn the premise that, at the macro level or holistic scale, social systems occupy identifiable space the case is reviewed of farmer mobility between relatively distinct social systems in Northern Italy. The uplandmontagnasocial system of the Northern Apennines provides outgoing labour for the urban‐industrial economy of the Po Lowlands, a migration flow which has many feedback characteristics. The impact of the feedback in terms of wealth and communication of ideas and values is manifest within the farm home, but is very inconsequential on the subsistence farming landscape. There is some evidence to suggest that feedback interaction between systems leads at least in the short run to the fossilisation of the economy.ZusammenfassungAusgehend von der festen Überzeugung, daß sich die ländliche Soziologie in einem trostlosen Zustand befindet wird in dieser Arbeit versucht, diese Krankheit zu diagnostizieren. Es werden einige der Grundzüge der sogenannten “konventionellen ländlichen Soziologie” dargestellt und ihre Grenzen diskutiert. Dabei wird die Auffassung vertreten, daß die ländliche Soziologie auf eine viel stärkere theoretische Orientierung bei der Bearbeitung ihrer Problem‐stellungen achten muß, und daß sie sich verstärkt für konzeptionelle und theoretische Ergebnisse interessieren sollte.
