AbstractThe variance bounds test was developed as a test of the efficient market hypothesis. The test implies an upper bound on the variability of stock prices if the efficient market hypothesis is valid Studies by Shiller (1981) and LeRoy and Porter (1981) show that the actual variability of stock prices exceeds this upper bound. This result casts doubt on the efficiency of the stock market. Defenders of the efficient market hypothesis argue that the variance bounds test cannot really test the hypothesis became of econometric and other deficiencies associated with this test. This paper critically surveys the major contributions of the literature on the variance bounds methodology and highlights the differences of opinion between supporters and critics of this test.RésuméLe test de limites des variantes a été conçu pour vérifier l'hypothèse du marché efficace. Ce test comporte une limite maximale sur la variante du cours du marché boursier si l'hypothèse d'efficacité du marché est valide. Des études par Shiller (1981) et LeRoy et Porter (1981) démontrent que la présente variante excède la limite maximale de ce test. Ce résultat jette un doute sur l'efficacité du marché boursier.
