Among many theories about the etiology of atrophic rhinitis with ozena, a reduced mucosal blood flow has been suggested, possibly caused by ‘sympathetic spasm’. The nasal mucosal blood flow has been investigated in 6 patients with this disease before and after topical administration of a sympathomimetic drug. No difference in action compared to healthy subjects was found. Other pathophysiological mechanisms must be searched
