The relationship between immunologic deficiency and bizarre patterns of infection is, of course, not new. But intensive studies of transplant patients, taken together with delineation of the susceptibilities manifested by persons with malignancies of the lymphoid system, have paved the way for a systematic approach to the understanding and management of diseases caused by opportunistic pathogens.
