The classic criteria for admission of an agent into the“virus club”fall far short of encompassing known oncogenic viruses. Understanding and applying this basic tenet may prove to be the key to establishment of a definite relationship between viruses and human neoplasia and may provide the impetus for development of the approach that will lead us to methods of effective prophylaxis against malignant disease.
