ABSTRACTThe eyes from four cats with GM1‐gangliosidosis with visceral involvement were examined by ophthalmoscopy, slit‐lamp, light and electron microscopy. The clinical signs of corneal opacity and small pale grey spots on the retina were found to correlate with polysaccharide storage in the endothelial cells and fibroblasts of the cornea, and glycolipid storage in the retinal ganglion cells. The absence of a ‘cherry red spot’ in feline lipidoses is explained on the basis of differences in the cellular architecture of the feline and human
