Ameloblastoma is the most common benign odontogenic neoplasm. Despite this fact, few surgical pathologists have more than a general familiarity with this tumor. Experience is often comprised of study sets or as preparation for the anatomic pathology portion of the American Board of Pathology Certifying examination. Such is not a criticism but a simple tact resulting from the low incidence of the disease in the general population. The histologic spectrum of ameloblastoma is surprisingly broad. This face implies the need for pathologists to recognize histologic variants of the tumor and includes recognition of preameloblastomatous changes in odontogenic cysts. The purpose of the this case review is to present the salient features of one of the least common histologic variants of ameloblastoma and to use the discussion as a forum to present the features of other histologic types. As a corollary, discussion of pitfalls in diagnosis will be bristly presented.
