Thirty-two patients with neurotic, particularly polyphobic, disorders were polygraphically investigated (as regards their EEG, heart rate, respiratory rate, skin resistance and blinking rate) while at rest and while exposed either to nonspecific or to patient-specific verbal stimulation. The psychophysical values thus obtained were compared with data obtained from a list of psychic as well as autonomic symptoms. The conventional diagnostic categories of the neuroses did not correspond to any typical physiological patterns; but some such patterns do appear to be linked to certain abnormal affective states.
