Recent research on seasonal affective disorder (SAD) has refined the diagnostic criteria and highlighted the heterogeneous nature of the disorder. Recent light-therapy studies have shown improved methodology, but some negative studies have added to the controversy over non-specific (placebo) effects of light exposure. Several psychobiologic studies have generated interesting data, but the pathophysiology of SAD remains elusive and unconfirmed.
