Reis-Bücklers' corneal dystrophy is an autosomal dominant disorder which primarily affects Bowman's membrane. Visual acuity begins to decrease around the age of 5 and continues to deteriorate over the next 20 years. The optometrist should be aware of the disorder so that the patient may be counseled regarding the genetic implications and should refer the patient to a corneal specialist when transplantation is required.
