To foster achievement of professional and organizational goals, leaders in nursing service and education must pay attention to reward mechanisms for nursing practice. Here the author describes a framework for identifying and developing effective reward mechanisms and applies it to a specific situation. Using nursing preceptorship programs as an example, she illustrates how nursing administrators can develop and implement specific reward mechanisms that increase role satisfaction for preceptors and benefit both the service and the educational institution.
