摘要:

&NA;Providing care to persons with dementia adversely affects the physical health of family caregivers. Physical complaints of family caregivers include low back pain, neck pain, arthritic knees, decreased general strength, and poor balance. This article describes the unique role of physical therapy in helping families minimize the physical burdens of caregiving that occur at the moderate to severe stages of dementia care. Physical therapy focuses on helping caregivers manage their aches and pains, prevent back and neck injuries, improve general strength and balance, and facilitate the safety and mobility of care recipients. An important aspect of the physical therapy intervention is helping caregivers incorporate exercise into daily routines.
