Falls in older adults are common, and causes are multifaceted, requiring a multidimensional approach to intervention. Controlled studies looking at interventions to lower fall incidence are limited. This article reviews falls intervention research with an emphasis on the FICSIT trials. Issues unique to the nursing home population and challenges and limitations to falls intervention research are addressed. Practical clinical recommendations for falls reduction are provided.
