Summary.It was found that the pyruvate (and lactate) content of the blood during work could vary considerably without any resulting effect on the ventilation, and further that the injection of 40 mg of pyruvic acid into the veins of a dog weighing 12 kg had no effect on its ventilation. It is concluded that pyruvic acid is not the substance that during work in partly anaerobic conditions causes the increase in ventilation.
