摘要:

AbstractIn an earlier time, instances of censorship in US schools centered around three main subjects: use of profane/obscene language, descriptions of sexual/excretory activities, and communism/un‐Americanism. Today, the tempo of citizens' complaints and challenges has increased and the scope of concerns has broadened. The Christian Right has attacked any and all classroom activities or materials which seem (to the attackers) as being inconsistent with ‘family values’ or any other dimension of Fundamentalist Christian Orthodoxy. On the left, a growing number of ‘special interest’ groups (feminists, gays/lesbians, African‐Americans, Hispanics, etc.) have mounted a similarly extensive cluster of complaints/challenges, most under the umbrella of Political Correctness. Thus North American teachers in all subject matter areas and at all levels must walk an increasingly narrow path in offering classroom
