The experience of New York and some other states since liberalized abortion laws-were enacted is demonstrating a nationwide“demand”for freely available termination of pregnancy. By and large, despite some early problems of adjustment to the demand, the procedure has been carried out safely. What has also been demonstrated is that the patient's emotional needs require careful attention if she is to receive optimal treatment and avoid repetitions.
