Publication of the DSM-IV highlights the renewed importance of negative symptoms in the diagnosis and phenomenology of schizophrenia. Future efforts should combine longitudinal studies of the lives of afflicted individuals with a dimensional approach to symptomatology to identify various components of the disorder before linking symptoms with brain pathology.
