More detailed knowledge of the sequence of changes in myocardium undergoing infarction, together with new biochemical methods of quantitating infarct size, has improved the prospect of pharmacologic and metabolic intervention to limit the extent of cell necrosis. Even modest gains in maintaining myocardial viability may be sufficient to permit subsequent definitive therapy by surgical or other means.
