Liberal branch‐banking laws have been shown to result in superior customer service. However, some have attributed this to restrictive deposit rate ceilings that have forced banks to compete on a nonprice basis. One form of customer service—accessibility—is modeled and the role of branching prior to and after deposit rate ceilings were phased out is evaluated.
