A representation for a general class of linear multivariable systems with feedback is introduced ; the structure of a multivariable system as an interconnection of scalar feedback systems is emphasized. The representation is used as a basis for obtaining new conditions which characterize the property of stability for multivariable systems. Since the resulting conditions determine rather explicit relationships between the variables defining the system they can be used in formulating design procedures.
