Peritoneal dialysis, its indications and contraindications are reviewed in the light of recent technical developments and clinical experience with 69 patients on maintenance treatment. Protein depletion and peritonitis can no longer be considered inevitable endpoints of acute or chronic peritoneal dialysis.
