This article presents data to enable a better understanding of the safety and comparative effectiveness of the various contraceptive regimens currently in wide usage. Comparisons are made with traditional birth control and mortality associated with legal abortions during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy, with risk of death from pregnancy and childbirth when no fertility control method is used, and estimates are provided of pill-related mortality among smokers and non-smokers.
