AbstractThe thermal decomposition of selected synthetic base fluids has been investigated. The effects of temperature and time on the rate and extent of thermal degradation were studied in a modified steel bomb test device. The effects of chain length and branching are important factors in the thermal stability of hydrocarbons and similar fluids. In order to overcome the 350°C limit of thermal stability, other classes of chemical have to be used
