Like alcoholism and schizophrenia, antisocial personality, or sociopathy, has a significant genetic component, albeit associated with major environmental influences. Diagnostic criteria, chief among them early onset, are helpful—but not necessarily predictive—in distinguishing the true sociopath from the criminal with no personality disorder. Characteristic medical problems associated with sociopathy are discussed.
