Anorexia and bulimia nervosa are associated with significant mortality and morbidity rates, and patients frequently relapse.Successful treatment must address the physical consequences of pathological eating behavior as well as the psychological and neuropathophysiological underpinnings. These disorders are increasingly difficult to adequately treat in today's managed care environment. This review highlights recent developments in the search for the biological substrate and treatment of these disorders.
