Recent research on autism and related disorders has increasingly focused on mechanisms (e.g. in relation to the genetics of autism and the nature of the psychologic deficits underlying the condition). The recent delineation of subtypes within the broader pervasive developmental disorder class of disorder has raised many issues for future research.
