The 1981 NCA Preliminary Report on Aging and Alcoholism estimated that there are 1-3 million elderly alcoholics yet only 15% are receiving treatment. This paper describes some of the obstacles and issues in identifying and treating elderly alcoholics. A model training program is presented which addresses the training needs of counselors in elderly services and alcoholism services in order for them to provide alcoholism identification, referral and treatment of elderly clientele.
