The past year has seen the emergence of a new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease reported in 10 young people. The probability that transmission of bovine spongiform encephalopathy from contaminated food to humans caused this phenomenon has produced great alarm and much debate. The identification of new mutations for and novel phenotypes of inherited prion disease continues to alert us to the increasing significance of these diseases as causes of neuropsychiatric morbidity.
