Thirty-seven scans were made in 27 cases of chronic schistosomiasis japonica in our series of over 800 liver scans. The spleen was visualized in the majority of the patients. In 7 (26%), the liver configuration looked like an ‘inverted triangle’ with the vertex downward, and it was round in 2 (7%). In 13 (48%), the inferolateral portion of the right lobe was thinned or almost disappearing on the scan, without discernible transition from the right to the left lobe. These characteristics of the liver shape are distinct from those in Laennec type cirrhosis. None of the non-schistosomal liver patients in our series showed the inverted triangle configuration.
