Since sickle cell disease mimics many other disorders, it may be misdiagnosed unless screening is performed routinely; in addition, its presence tends to complicate other diseases and require alterations in the way these are managed. Emphasis is placed on the avoidance of unnecessary surgery, the proper choice of anesthesia when it is necessary, and a variety of other measures that can help ward off crises.
