Anaesthesia has an important role to play in the provision of dental, maxillofacial, plastic and reconstructive surgery. More outpatient procedures are being performed and standards of practice in this environment are continually being improved. For major surgery on inpatients, changes and advances in surgical techniques, for example in neonatal cleft-lip surgery and ‘free-flap surgery’, may have important implications for anaesthetists.
