Reviewed in this article are recent publications on the role of psychosocial factors in chronic pain. The material is organized around three approaches: psychiatric symptom, operant-behavioral, and cognitive-behavioral. The first approach continues to generate many assessment studies, but few studies involving treatments. The second remains influential, but has become increasingly merged with the third. The third is reflected in the high volume of current research into patients' pain beliefs, understanding and coping skills.
